George Muia is a seasoned Customs and Tax professional in Kenya with over 35 years of experience gained during his tenure at the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). Over this period, he held senior executive positions across all core revenue departments: Customs, Domestic Taxes, and Investigations & Enforcement, giving him a rare 360-degree perspective of Kenya’s fiscal landscape.
As Project Manager of the Customs Reforms and Modernisation Project, George led the design and implementation of systems and technologies that improved efficiency and elevated Kenya’s performance in the World Bank Ease of Doing Business Rankings.
He later served as Head of the Customs Policy Division, where he was responsible for drafting fiscal budget proposals presented to the National Treasury and later considered by the East African Community (EAC) Sectoral Council for Trade. His expertise in tax policy formulation has had a direct impact on national and regional fiscal frameworks.
George’s extensive exposure enables him to provide businesses with expert guidance in tax compliance, dispute resolution, customs advisory, and fiscal policy interpretation. He has represented Kenya in international negotiations and benefited from training sponsored by the OECD, JICA, and the World Bank, further enriching his global outlook.
A graduate of Pune University, India (B.Com Accounting, 1987), George also holds a postgraduate qualification in Tax Administration. He is a Certified Corporate Governance practitioner and alumnus of the Center for Corporate Governance Kenya (CCG).
